Lookbook! Y-3 fall 2016

For Autumn/Winter 2016, Y-3 stripped down to an essential aesthetic of rebellious modernism with a tough, industrial edge. Presented during Paris men’s fashion week at the raw, intimate, underground space Entrepote Eiffel, on Sunday, January 24, 2016, the collection hearkened to two stylistic markers of the 1990s—rave culture and minimalism—to present a contemporary view on sport-style

Since launching Y-3 in 2003, adidas and Yamamoto have displayed daring feats of technical wonder. This season emphasized Yohji’s undeniable footprint on tailoring and fashion while at the same time conjuring a darker, more aggressive style in lean, elongated, and powerful silhouettes. It is in this intersection of classicism and rebellion that the collection finds its strength. The season’s restrained color palette is distinctly monochromatic, executed almost entirely in black, white, and varying shades of gray, with electric shocks of orange and turquoise. Fabrics heighten a slick, industrial mood, yet the overall effect is of utmost simplicity.

This season, Yamamoto devised the collection in four distinct stories:

REBUILD: A dichotomy between classicism and rebellion as timeless Yamamoto refined tailoring is deconstructed and reconstructed with rough, naïve, DIY touches, such as industrial zips down the placket of a perfect white shirt.

60 FEET TALL: A confident, ’90s rock-chick energy with long, lean leather pants and draped shirting that exaggerate the silhouette to extremes.

INDUSTRIAL SPORTS: A moody look at modern sportswear: dusty and disheveled yet technically advanced with clean lines.

FUTURE SPORT: A return to Y-3’s roots: style and innovation. Here, a breakthrough fabric reacts to heat by changing colors from black to gray or black to orange, creating intricate marbled patterns within its weave.

Footwear presents new and refined takes on the now-classic Qasa and adidas Boost, while also offering new, futuristic shapes with minimal construction and non-traditional seaming. The result is a cleaner, faster, more modern-looking shoe silhouette that defines the future of sport-style.
